My former apartment was rather large for Milan's standards...
I don't really regret it; a small one is easier and faster to clean, and heating will be cheaper. But at this point, downsizing and decluttering have become a necessity.

Luckily there are plenty of pages that give tips and show how to do, but even this way, sometimes it's difficult to choose what to keep and what to give away.

I decided I won't throw away anything unless it's broken; almost all the things I want to eliminate (clothes, furniture, kitchen tools, various items...) are still good and usable, so I joined Freecycle and a couple of "free giveaway" groups on Facebook and I'm using them to give away my things. I also gave several of them to a local parish that organizes a second-hand market a couple of times a year.
It would be much faster to just throw away everything, I soon realized, but why sending things to landfills when there are people who will be happy to use them again? I also find it's much easier to give away an item to somebody who will use it, rather than just discard it and throw it away.

My home is still in a mess (it will be a long process!), but it's improving.
I will post a few photos when it starts looking better!
Is anybody else downsizing or decluttering at the moment?

...How I envy those who keep updating their blog regularly and never disappear!

Apparently I'm hopeless.. It's like when you haven't called a friend for some time and you think it would be strange to call him after so long, and let more time pass (another speciality of mine!)

In these months I've practically finished the renewal of my future home (not all by myself! Bathroom and kitchen were beyond my capabilities and had a renewal company change all the water pipes, tiles, etc.); my present apartment is on sale and I'm receiving visits of possible buyers... Which implies a lot of extra cleaning and tidying up if I don't want to scare them away. In the meanwhile I'm trying to get rid (by selling, giving away on Freecycle, giving to charities) of a few things I won't be taking to the new home, as that's smaller than where I'm living now... Trying to fit everything is a bit like playing Tetris!
But I'm happy I managed to find room enough for all my books and bookcases.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">A quanto pare non ho speranza...
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

I'm rather happy because this year I'm not late (as usual...): in Milano, by tradition, Christmas trees an cribs are done on 7th December and this time, probably for the first in my life, I respected the tradition.
(Why 7th December? Because it's S. Ambrogio day, the saint protector of the city...And it's a holiday in Milano so people can spend the day starting to get their homes ready for Christmas).
My tree is 23 this year! Luckily artificial trees don't grow, or I would have problems to fit it in the living room. It sounds like a lot of years, but I wash it under the shower every few years before putting it away, so it's still in acceptable conditions and I hope to keep it for several more years! I use an artificial tree to avoid killing real trees (I would be sorry though they are so beautiful!), and keeping it for a long time instead of changing it every few years reduces pollution ...And after all these years it's really a part of the family !

----------------------------------------------------

Natale sta arrivando!

Here is my second goldwork embroidery finished! (see the previous post for the other one)
Unfortunately the silver threads that were already stitched look a bit tarnished, even if the embroidery was kept in a box (or maybe right because of that!) ... I don't think it's a big problem, this gives the embroidery a rather "vintage" look that is not bad in my opinion; but the threads that were in their original envelopes were still shiny and brand-new looking, so they look a bit too new compared to the other half ...Anyway I trust that in a short time they too will tarnish a bit and the look will be more uniform.

This embroidery was padded using a lot of waxed cotton threads...I remember preparing it was very long! Silver threads just lie on the padding and had to be cut carefully in the right length.

Elenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08872617216503412388noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17106208.post-80643072042731512532014-06-27T20:15:00.003+02:002014-07-01T20:25:23.961+02:00Lost and found...and finished!

I finished my first goldwork embroidery! I had started it (with another one) at a course long ago, but then....I lost it! Actually as it was a very delicate work I put it in a box thinking "this way it will be safe and sound" and then completely forgot where I had put it... So I never manage to complete it.
Until a couple of days ago, while looking for something else (I keep losing things, I know!) I opened a box and ...Surprise, the two small goldwork embroideries were there!
I immediately started working at this one, which was nearly completed, and indeed I finished it yesterday night. It's a golden pear, designed by Jenny Adin-Christie; the kit is "Nutmeg and Pear Sprig" and includes another similar pattern, but with a silver nutmeg...Thanks to the excellent teaching of Luisella Strona ( who held the course I attended ) and the very complete kit directions, I finished it without problems... Now I'll start working at the nutmeg, which is just begun.
The second photo shows the relief of the embroidery better...

The preparation of that room for painting took much more than a couple of weeks!
Actually I was stopped for about 10 days by a bad back pain I caused myself by exercising as soon as I got up... I thought it might be a good
idea, but obviously it was not! I think I've learnt my lesson :-)

I finished today, after using more than 400 nails to fix cork tiles properly and 1.5 kilos of model putty to fill the gaps between tiles...

I'm sorry for the bad quality photo (I took it with my phone, and I think it shows I'm a fan of very basic phones...) but I really wanted to celebrate the end of this long work!

Now at last I'll be able to start painting!
(Italiano)

Adesso finalmente potrò cominciare a dipingere...Elenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08872617216503412388noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17106208.post-76263681535902910312014-05-19T22:42:00.000+02:002014-05-19T22:42:47.811+02:00Going on with works...I wanted to post regular updates about my works at my future apartment, but I've been rather disorganized...
Anyway I took photos as works went on, and progress is visible!
Here are a few of the photos I took, it's nice to see how the home is improving!

This was a corner of the living room after removing wallpaper ( still on the floor! )...Then I had to wash and scrape the walls carefully to remove paper leftovers and glue, and wash the ceiling...so you can see in the following photo, that was necessary! (the part of ceiling on the right has only been washed with water) It was a hard work, but surely saved a coat of paint...
After painting all the living room, I had to change the roller blind in my son's room... The old one was in terrible conditions, (as were all the windows in origin, but I had managed to repaint all of them before the winter)
So I bought a new roller blind, which consisted in a lot of heavy PVC sticks...

I sawed them to the right length and composed the roller blind, this way

...Until it was complete...

And I could install it (with my son's help, as it was very heavy and rather difficult to handle). This is the finished window, already painted and with a new handle

Then I added a folding door to the living room (that didn't have any door). I don't particularly like folding doors, but a traditional door would have taken too much wall space, which I need for bookcases, and anyway it's a door that will stay almost always open, so never mind if it's nor very practical...
Anyway, I found a model that didn't look too bad, and as I had done with the roller blind I had to cut it to size and put all the pieces together...

And here is the door finished and in its place (and the living room is painted)

Yesterday I started to work at my son's room!
The walls and ceiling are covered with 1 cm thick cork tiles, for insulation, and I'm keeping them.. But I want to paint them as they are dark brown now and the room looks very dark. Unfortunately there is a bit of space between tiles and some of them are a bit bent or detached in some corners, so first of all I must stabilize them and fill all the spaces.. I found a nice material for crafts and painting that remains flexible when dry, won't crack and can be painted... The best way to fill the space between tiles is using a syringe, and this is the work I'm doing these days!

It's very slow of course, and I'll need a few more days to finish this wall

And then there will be the ceiling (that needs some fixing too as some tiles look uneven)!

I think I'll need a couple of weeks before starting painting this room! But works are going on :-)
Its peculiarity was that it was related to all the embroidery techniques, EXCEPT cross-stitch, as there were ( and are!) already so many cross-stitch groups that something a bit different was really needed, for those who like to do different embroidery techniques.
In the last few years, the group has become increasingly silent, a characteristic I noticed in most of Yahoo Groups and Mailing lists I had joined... I suppose the "concept" of internet group or mailing list is losing popularity now that most people seem to spend lots of their time on Facebook, or in even more "visual" contexts such as Tumblr , Pinterest or Instagram. People love images, and it's great to be able to look at other people's works, or share one's own achievements, and this is not very immediate with "old" tools such as Yahoo Groups and mailing lists. So after a quick survey among members, it was decided to "move" the old SoloRicamo group on Facebook, as this would make it more suitable to the way people interact on the internet nowadays and hopefully more lively. I volunteered to be one of the administrators (hoping we aren't flooded by spammers... )
For those who might be interested to join it or give it a look, the group is here (it's an Italian group, so messages are in Italian. Of course one can decide to follow it anyway, or give it a look from time to time. It was opened yesterday, so it's brand-new!).

I abandoned my blog yet another time.
In my defense I can only say I've been busy... I'm working to renew an apartment where I'll move in the future. It was my aunt's apartment, and for a series of reasons had been left to itself for 7 years...
And there are LOTS of works to do! Taking the wallpaper off walls, painting, painting the windows, renewing all the wiring. (and many others, but I try not to think of ALL there is to do , or it looks like emptying the ocean with a teaspoon..) I don't know when it will be over! But it wouldn't make much sense to pay workers to do what I can do myself (especially as I'm not working, so I have plenty of time).
For the moment, I can show a photo of the small entrance hall, that is finished...

Here it is ...

I stitched the rest of the pattern in black so that the cat would stand out from the border .. I also used only one strand as I feared that using two strands solid black would look a bit too "heavy", this way it's rather light. I think it doesn't demonstrates the 107 years of age this pattern has!

Now I have to stitch the dog and then finish them into a scissor fob or a needle case...

(For those who missed it and are interested, the cat pattern and the ling to the dog's one are in the third post before this one)

(per chi fosse interessata, lo schema del gatto e il link a quello del cane sono nel terzo post precedente a questo)Elenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08872617216503412388noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17106208.post-84013920236445641452013-03-09T21:17:00.003+01:002014-02-18T21:09:57.525+01:00The catHere is the little cat of the 1906 pattern (see the next-to-last post before this)! I stitched it on a white linen I had; it was probably a but high-count for using two strands and it looks very tight, but I like that it was so small and the fabric doesn't show through.. Now I'm uncertain whether to keep the same colour for the border or to change it (I think I'll change it, after all) ...

Elenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08872617216503412388noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17106208.post-35298345722034183972013-03-08T23:04:00.001+01:002014-02-18T21:10:56.255+01:00Scent of Spring...Today, for Women's Day, my son bought me a beautiful rose and and a bunch of mimosa flowers, and I wish to share them with you!
It was such a beautiful surprise; I love roses, and mimosas are my favourite flowers! Mimosas here are the traditional flowers that men offer to women on 8th March and they are difficult to find in other periods as their blooming doesn't last long...Which is a pity as I love their scent.
But at least for a few days I'll be able to enjoy these flowers, a wonderful reminder that Spring is coming!

Elenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08872617216503412388noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17106208.post-23316796523312446062013-03-05T14:25:00.000+01:002013-03-06T12:00:45.176+01:001906 cross-stitched catI've just uploaded to MediaFire all the single pages of Il Ricamo 1906, No.5 (4th February 1906) , you will find links to them and other issues in the page dedicated to this old magazine (see tabs above!). The link to download the whole magazine in one compressed file is not yet up as I have the files on my other pc and I haven't yet uploaded it (and I can't do it right now), but it will be added in a few hours.[UPDATE: now all the links are in their place! ]
I loved a couple of small cross-stitch patterns that could be used for some small item (a needlebook, or a pincushion), one is this cat, and the other is a dog in the same size and style...Both are on Page 34 of the magazine. I think I'll stitch them as they look so lovely and quick to do, and in case I'll publish the photos of my work!

Elenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08872617216503412388noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17106208.post-69143839365240359742013-02-27T09:42:00.003+01:002013-02-27T14:43:54.184+01:00Dusting the Web(s)
Returning to my blog after nearly one year is mostly like returning home after having been away for a long time...Things are like you left them, yet there is a lot of work to do!
There are no cobwebs and no spiders to chase (luckily!), but the place looks rather abandoned and there are many details that look out of place and show nobody had been here recently: broken links, links to blogs that had not been updated for ages, "work-in-progress" parts that haven't progressed at all, etc... And now it's the moment to fix everything before going on.
I think the most urgent thing to do is to restore images... Lots of the photos I had posted in the past were links to to actual photos I had on Webshots, and with the closing of that site they have become unavailable and are just broken links at the moment (actually, to be precise, Webshots has not closed down, but has been turned into a different kind of service, and anyway all the links are broken all the same as URLs have changed).
As statistic say many people come here from Google searches on topics that now have lost all their images, this is certainly urgent!
I've also started skimming my old list of blogs I was following (more than 220!)...Some of them have been abandoned or closed, others have changed topics (interests change!), so I must verify if some can be deleted. Yesterday started to go through their list, I deleted a few but I added just as many I had just discovered ! There are lots of great blogs I want to follow...
And of course I'll have to go on uploading my scans (photos, actually...) of the old embroidery magazines,"Il Ricamo" and "Il Ricamo Illustrato" of course! I still have many issues already photographed and not yet uploaded on MediaFire (and more yet to photograph...)
So, stay around! Everything will be fixed soon :-)

Tutto verra' sistemato presto :-)
...Just in case someone was worried about my disappearance (nearly one year!Wow!).
I was just lost in the world of social networks... I've mainly stayed on Facebook in the last 12 months, and lost contact with this blog (though I never forgot about it).
Actually I spent some time to give a look to other social media too, as when you are on Facebook you discover a lot of people use Twitter, and then you discover things that had been only names so far, such as Tumblr, Pinterest, Stumble... At last you realize 24 hours are not enough and unless you hire a secretary to do work for you, you'll have to limit your presence to few of these places.
So, this is in the end my choice...

Blogger: YES. Because a blog is a place where you can write a bit more, leaving posts that (hopefully) make some sense and can be re-read over time.

Facebook: YES. Well, everybody and everything seems to be there! (Except those who are afraid of it or for personal reasons don't want tobe seen there) I know a lot of wonderful people there (and a few not-so-wonderful ones, but the balance is widely positive) and discovered a lot of great artists. Of course it's easy to spend way too much time there...Anyway, among the lots of Elena Rossi there, I am this one .

Twitter: NO. I have an account there, and I really tried hard to like Twitter...But I just couldn't. I hate to have only 140 characters to write, and I don't like going to my page and seeing an endless string of messages (?) looking as if they were sent by someone with a broken keyboard... So I decided I don't like it; after all we are not obliged to like everything. I keep my account as it's great to go there when Facebook is down and read messages of people saying Facebook is down :-).

Pinterest: NO/YES. Beautiful to collect photos...But dangerous for your time. If you are like me, you will soon start "pinning" everything, ordering images by content and ending up with an almost infinite number of album. I had started very enthusiastically about one year ago, then there were copyright issues about Pinterest and pinned images and I deleted almost everything I had as it seemed users would be accused of copyright infringement... When the problem was solved I returned there but never started my collections again. Anyway I think it's great if you want to gather images for inspiration, or for craft ideas; I think I'll use it this way in the future.

StumbleUpon: NO. But a great way to waste your time! Basically, StumbleUpon adds a feature to your browser, a small bar with few buttons..The main one is "Stumble!" that will show a random page on the internet, based on the preferences you selected when you joined it, and the "likes" and "dislikes" you vote on pages. As you might "like" a page you stumbled on -and you'll get more pages of that type- or "dislike" it, and you will get fewer in your future stumbles. It's nice because you discover sites you would have never found otherwise.. But of course the risk of wasting a lot of time is very real (especially as you can "follow" other stumblers etc,. much the same way as Facebook and Twitter allow). I don't use it anymore, I'm just glad to know that the "Stumble!" button is still there...StumbleUpon must be great anyway for those who have to spend time waiting in front of a computer

Tumblr: NO. Apparently people who use it enjoy to collect large images without any caption nor credits.. When I'm looking for a source of an image I often end up on such "collections" on Tumblr. Who took the photo? Where? Whose work is showed in it? Where is that magnificent place ? All these answers remain unanswered. In my opinion an image without credits and without explanations is just background noise, it's not information, and I can't use or like a media that supports this.

Google+: NO. Even if I believe it's intrinsically superior to Facebook, I won't move to it (oh, yes, of course I do have an account there, anyway! ). It would just complicate things to have two "parallel" accounts to manage (though I know there are utilities to simplify the task), and especially I don't like the way Google meddles with everything you do and tries to gather all the information about you and make it available everywhere...Just to give you an example, I bought a Samsung Galaxy S (not the phone, it's a sort of iPod device for playing MP3s and Apps). I registered my Gmail account on it and "magically" all the photos of this blog appear on my player too, in the "Photos" folder! What if I did NOT want to have my blog photos there? Or if I did NOT want them in my Google+ account too (as of course Google decided I needed them there too...)? I think Google is deciding too much about what people want or don't want (and I haven't yet forgiven Google for killing Picnik...)

Of course there are many other sites and services in addition to these (I've just noticed I forgot Instagram, for example. LinkedIn was not forgotten but it's too much "job-oriented" to be included in this list...). Feel free to add them in your comments if you think there is some nice one that should be tried!
Sono ancora viva!

Facebook: SI'.
Be', tutti e tutti sembrano essere su Facebook quindi voglio esserci anch'io!

Twitter: NO.

Pinterest: NO/SI'.

StumbleUpon: NO.
the same way as Facebook and Pinterest allow).

Tumblr: NO.

Google+: NO.

I'm terribly late, but at last I added a new issue of "Il Ricamo"! It's No.46 of 1909, and you will find it in the page with the same name (scroll down the page as it's the last one, after a series of titles I haven't yet uploaded!)
I also uploaded a couple of 1906 issues (but if you had downloaded them from my old site you should already have them!) and especially, for each issue I added the possibility to download a .zip file containing all the pages available... Maybe this will make download easier for someone. Anyway I still kept the separate files (one for each page), in case you prefer downloading several smaller files rather than just one large one.
I hope you'll like the new issue!

There are plenty of braids, fringes and things that a cat may like ...

Elenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08872617216503412388noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17106208.post-7405151993590511892012-01-20T22:51:00.002+01:002012-01-20T22:52:15.100+01:00An experimentI've been away for a couple of weeks, but there was a good reason! I had bad tooth extraction (the tooth came in tiny fragments and the dentist had to work for more than two hours to pull and chisel off all the pieces...) and as a complication of it I got osteitis, so in the end I'm still with toothache two weeks later , and the thing will go on for a while.... :-(

So I couldn't do much in these days, especially last week! I stopped the uploading of the embroidery magazines, but I started it again today and should finish it in the weekend.

Anyway I've started again to upload the photos of the embroidery magazines, today I added a few issues and the rest should go online during the weekend.

I've also managed to weave a bit, and I titled my latest project "Cat on the mat" , as it's a series of experimental weavings intended to be for cats... I took a few photos of the last one (that I finished today, but it's still on the loom).

The idea is of making something nicer than the usual cat mat /rug, as these things are used anywhere at home, and a cheap (ugly) cat blanket is not very nice to see on the sofa or an armchair.

I used the same warp to make three mats of different size and pattern (but using the same yarns), tomorrow I'll cut them and finish them.

Links will be available in the respective pages, and files will be hosted on MediaFire... Today I made a test with the first issue available, from 1905 (actually there is only one sheet of it) and it seems to work. Anyway I think that for the other magazines I'll zip the different pages in a single file, so that only one link per magazine will be enough and download will be easier and faster.

I've also scanned an image for you to use as you prefer... It's a chapter ornament by John Moyr Smith from an ancient book of Robert Burns' poems.

It's an illustrated edition I bought some time ago... Almost nobody buys old books in English here and the seller -at a local stall selling used books, normally at 2 Euros each- was evidently happy to get rid of some old unwanted books...So in the end he left me 4 books for 5 Euros, included this leather bound (in bad conditions), gilded pages volume :-), with beautiful illustrations that I'll share on my blog.

Elenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08872617216503412388noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17106208.post-48589603431521229872012-01-03T21:56:00.001+01:002012-01-03T21:56:22.539+01:00New look for the New Year!I got a bit tired of my green photo background, so I decided to adopt a lighter and simpler look...

Now that I closed my Italian Needlecrafts site I'll move here the photos of the ancient embroidery magazines that were hosted there... I've already prepared two pages (one for Il Ricamo and one for Il Ricamo Illustrato) for easy access; in the next days I'll add links to download the photos of pages, which will be hosted on another site. Files will also remain on the Italian Needlecrafts site for a few weeks, but as the contract with the provider is expiring in about three weeks and I won't renew it, I expect the site to disappear soon (but not before all the files are safe and links are posted here).

Without resolutions!Happy New Year everybody!
Another year has just begun and many people are busy making new resolutions to change their life...I've decided to skip that!
I'm old enough to know that my new year resolutions last just for a few weeks, then fail miserably...And last year I read this very inspiring article that convinced me to give up the whole matter! Now I spread my "resolutions" all over the year; whenever I feel some change can be made or would be useful...I don't obsess with changing my life from 1st January, as it won't work, anyway!
That article appeared on The Guardian one year ago, but it's still perfectly valid and applicable today... I 'm sure you will find it more helpful and inspiring than most of the "new year, new life" articles that can be read these days...Elenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08872617216503412388noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17106208.post-45702400984170555252011-12-25T23:37:00.003+01:002011-12-25T23:37:45.847+01:00Update on trade-offMerry Christmas everybody!
Today I wanted to give an update on the trade-off ...Sandra chose my Christmas ornament in exchange for her lavender sachet; I sent it to her about ten days ago and she received it very quickly! She already blogged about it at http://orlosubitoit.blogspot.com/2011/12/blog-baratto-de-dicembre-terzo.html ; as you can see my ornament already found a place on her Christmas tree (right in time!)
But I too received her lavender sachet!
I'm just sorry I didn't take photos of the packaging as Sandra did (and her packet looked much better than mine!), but the lavender was so perfumed that even Minu came to see when I opened it so I took a photo...

Buon Natale a tutti!

(and really, you have no idea of what it takes to make her get out of her hiding place in the morning!)

Here the sachet was still in its plastic bag, and very flattened by the mail! Sandra had added some paper stars and snow flakes in the bag as decorations, you can see them in the photo.
Now I'm keeping the lavender sachet on my desk near my computer, I love it !(I think Minu' was a bit disappointed by discovering it was not for her!)

Oh, another news, I was featured on a blog! I was asked an interview to be published on a crafter's blog.. Here it is!

Elenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08872617216503412388noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17106208.post-48869674805628173262011-11-26T22:52:00.001+01:002011-11-27T22:15:17.790+01:00Blogging again....And weavingI'm back after a long time.
At first it was just a normal delay..I was busy and couldn't post when I wished to.
Then...It became a sort of experiment! As I saw I had more readers when I didn't post than when I posted (I even earned two more followers -very welcome! :-) - which didn't happen in the previous month when I posted more or less regularly...) and I wanted to see how long that would go on... internet dynamics are sometimes weird! Maybe the more I write the less readers I get? That would be funny...
Anyway today I declare the test ended and started writing again! :-)
At the moment I'm weaving an "unusual" shawl again at the moment, something improvised which I don't know exactly how will look when finished...

I used several different yarns, included one with a reflective tread which I used to make braided fringes a bit everywhere...

If I won't like is as a shawl, it will end up as a blanket for my cat, she will appreciate the fringes! :-)

In any case I have decided to stop weaving scarves and shawls for a while, as they have no market and I have more than enough for my "personal use" for many years...People prefer cheap scarves bought at markets, and even giving my scarves as gifts would be interpreted as "you gave me something made by yourself so that you didn't have to spend any money" (as for some reasons work is considered of no value, and bought gifts have a higher "status" than self-made ones...), so I prefer not to use them as gifts either...I'll switch to something different, things for the home or that I can use in different ways!

Elenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08872617216503412388noreply@blogger.com2
